Sruthi Boddapati, Senior at East Carolina University, received the 2017 Laura Marie Leary Elliot Scholarship. The award is a memorial scholarship named after the late Laura Marie Leary Elliot, who I had the pleasure of meeting during my freshman year at ECU. Elliot was the first African-American undergraduate to receive a degree from East Carolina University.

The Laura Marie Elliot Memorial Scholarship is an Access Scholarship that is awarded to outstanding students who are pursuing careers in fields that are historically underrepresented by minority populations.

Congratulations, Sruthi!

Dr. Valeria O. Lovelace, East Carolina University Class of 1973, delivered this year's keynote address. Dr. Lovelace is the President and founder of Media Transformations, which is an educational research and production company. She was the Director of Research for Sesame Street for 14 years and is currently the Research and Curriculum Development Consultant for Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer, Go Diego Go, and Disney's Little Einsteins.

The night ended with the presentation of awards to honor and recognize the Black Alumni Chapter recipients of the Dr. Andrew Best Trailblazer Award, the Laura Marie Elliott Courageous Leader Award and the Ledonia S. Wright Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award.

I'm so very honored to have the amazing opportunity to work alongside my Alma Mater, East Carolina University, and more specifically honoring and celebrating a group of students who share some of the same experiences during my time at ECU. Thank you so much to Mrs. Jennifer Griggs and Dr. Virginia Hardy for your support! You guys are simply amazing!
